Have you heard of the crab anaolgy? A bunch of crabs are in a bucket and one crawls to the top and is about to make his way out, but instead, he is hindered by his unsupportive crab buddies who don't want him to succeed. They pull him back down.
"If I Can't Have It, Neither Can You"
Human Behavior, is sadly, very similar. A group (of friends, of family memembers, of colleagues) that tries to diminish the importance of success one receives or negates that a new endeavor they are partaking in has any value.
It's human nature, "If I Can't Have It, Neither Can You".
The word CAN is interesting, right. The thing is, most of the time, the other crabs CAN help each other to success. Most of the time, humans CAN achieve the same level of happiness or success. But they won't. They won't because it's much easier to just bring someone down and make excuses for themselves.
SUCCESS & HAPPINESS
What is truly the best marker of success? I'd say Happiness.
Many times, happiness can be achieved by going after what you want, your passions, your desires. Sometimes it includes a financial reward. Sometimes it doesn't. But I'd say, it is almost never achieved with a bad attitude and judgement of others. Don't. Be. A. Crab.
DON'T STRIVE FOR PERFECTION
I do a lot of unpopular things. I sold my home. I travel the world with two toddlers in tow and I don't have them in school. I don't work a 9-5 office job. I found a way to make money while I do what I love to do. I found a company to work with that resonates with me on levels of having social impact & being financially rewarding. I don't try to be perfect. I'm far far FAR from it. Some days I'm crabby. Some days I lose my patience. Some days I'm judgemental where I shouldn't be. Some days I'm a crab. Some days I excersise and eat healthy. Some days I don't. But I strive to be better - to teach better - to live better. Don't be so hard on yourself and don't be so hard on others. It's so much more about the progress and so much less about the perfection.
CRAB = UNHAPPINESS
Anytime I find a crab in my life - someone unsupportive or judgemental. I feel sorry for them. Honestly. I feel really sorry for them. They must be at a place in their lives where they are so unhappy and don't know how to move forward. Or maybe they are too scared to go after their own dreams. Or maybe they've failed and didn't know how to pick themselves back up. Or maybe they don't have enough belief in themself.
If you are judging others on a new endeavor - a new workout program, a new business, a new product, a new lifestyle - ask yourself if that person is doing something to harm you or anyone else? If so, by all means, judge away!! (Would it shock you to know that I DO believe there is a place for judgement.) But, I'd venture to guess, the majority of the time, that person is going after something to enrich their lives and the lives of those around them.
Don't Be A Crab.
