To Be or Not To Be A Direct Sales Consultant

And more about what it is like to be a consultant with Beautycounter...

Like many people, I said NO, NEVER, NOT ME! I’m not going into MLM or Direct Sales or whatever it is. I don’t want to sell to people. I don’t have the time.

Now on the other hand, I don’t want a job where I have to sit in an office all day just to collect a paycheck from a company I don’t even care for all that much. I don’t want someone clocking my hours, giving me a set amount of days that I can have off to be with my family. And for crying out loud, I don’t want to spend time commuting.

My husband and I resigned (okay quit) our really nice paying jobs (as far as jobs are concerned) back in 2009 (I think, maybe 2008?). We wanted to build a lifestyle for our future family that was...well...more conducive to living. We started our own consulting company and started traveling the world picking up small gigs here and there until we found our niche. (I could go on about failed attempts, successes and struggles, but that’s for another post.)

After I had my first baby, I stopped taking on clients. My focus was on my little miracle of new life. I still managed aspects of the business, but on my own time. After my second child was born and I had even less time to think about working, I learned about Beautycounter. Of course, when you aren’t looking for it...something great always appears.

I heard about Beautycounter from some articles in the press and an old colleague mentioned it on facebook. I researched the company...because that’s what I like to do for every “safer”, “greener”, “natural” company before I try them. Mainly because I’ve seen companies do their purchasing, their selling, their marketing (I was in the business for years) and I don’t trust them. (Not every single one...just, unfortunately, the majority).

As I researched Beautycounter, I was impressed. Overly impressed. Like too good to be true. So I researched some more. I researched the Founder (Gregg Renfrew) the team at HQ, the investors (TPG)...their past investments/companies. I had never seen a company in all my research that was like Beautycounter. Innovative, Transparent, Truthful and utterly concerned with safety AND high performing products.

Their sourcing of ingredients is unparalleled. Their commitment to the the Community is spot on. They are a certified B corporation (more here about that awesomeness). And, they actively pursue change in legislation (where the system is outdated and broken and doesn’t justly protect our safety in the beauty industry). It’s not just about products and’s about making a an impact in our world that will help our generation and future generations.

Wait, what? No...I can’t really be thinking about joining one of These Companies...How am I going to explain this one to my husband.

Luckily for me, my hubby trusts my judgement. Don’t get me wrong...he questioned a lot (like we both do to each other when diving into a new venture). But, he knows I’m a smart, educated woman that knows a good company when I see it. And so I decided that I wanted to be a part of this amazing company and a part of the even bigger movement to educate people about what they are putting on their skin.

Would I fail? Maybe

Do I have time? No, but who does...but ultimately, it will allow my hubby to cut back on work and us both to spend MORE TIME with our family.

I didn’t want to have regrets. The company is young and very innovative in their structure. They have solid backing, but most importantly, the women are amazing - helpful, understanding...just wanting to make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others. There isn't any pressure, just helping hands when you want them.

Beautycounter is young...3 years old. They’ve experienced phenomenal growth (500% last year and projected to do the same this year). They’ve branched out internationally into Canada earlier this year. They are Education 1st, product 2nd company...sharing our social mission and educating others. They are constantly in the news... and celebrities (not endorsed) praise their product performance and commitment to safety.

Beautycounter is considered Direct Retail which means that we sell through multiple channels and are really innovative & strategic in our approach...a bit different from other Direct Sales companies.

But what I failed to see in my years of saying “No, Never, Not Me” is what freedom this type of business allows you to allows you to be there for your allows you to make money based on the hours and work you put in. It isn’t a scam or a’s a real entrepreneurial business. You have to work, you have to put in the hours, you have to get out of your comfort zone a just get to decide when and how.

So, if you are contemplating becoming a consultant at Beautycounter or any other company, go for it. If it feels like a good fit for you, what is there to lose? At the end of the day, at least you are helping other people learn more about safer products...and that can be life changing for many families.
